Real estate markets in Eastern Europe set to recover at different speeds
WEDNESDAY, 11 NOVEMBER 2009
Poland tipped as leader
As parts of Europe enters economic recovery mode many real estate markets are also improving but at markedly different rates, according to a new report on trends in the investment, office, retail, industrial, hotels and residential sectors.
In Europe improving investor sentiment is driving activity forwards for a specific band of prime real estate but financing remains difficult to obtain, according to the Jones Lang LaSalle CEE City Report for the third quarter of 2009.
Eurozone emerges from recession
Germany, the world's biggest exporter, has seen a pick-up in exports
The eurozone economy has emerged from recession after growing between July and September, figures have shown.
The 16 nations that use the euro collectively grew 0.4%, after shrinking by 0.2% between April and June.
BA and Iberia agree merger deal
BA has been considering a merger with Iberia for some time
British Airways and the Spanish airline Iberia say they have reached a preliminary agreement for a merger that should be formalised early next year.

Russian economy growing strongly
Russia's economy is heavily dependent on oil
Russia's economy grew by 13.9% between July and September compared with the previous quarter, the country's federal statistics agency has said.
The strong growth provided evidence of the country's recovery from a severe economic downturn.
The Russian economy, which is heavily reliant on oil exports, was one of the worst hit by the global downturn.
The rebound in the oil price since the start of this year has helped the economy to recover.
Compared with the same three months a year ago, however, the Russian economy shrank by 8.9%.
Fragile recovery
Earlier on Thursday, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev said his government had succeeded in stabilising the economy.
"But the revival in the markets remains weak and unstable. And the most dangerous thing now is to calm down. We have to continue realising the anti-crisis plan and be ready to implement new measures," he cautioned.
Analysts also argued that the recovery was fragile and heavily dependent on the oil price.
"The main driver of the recovery was the increase in oil and metal prices and the trickle down effect on production in those supporting industries," said Chris Weafer at Uralsib.
"The recovery is very dependent on the global economy rather than domestic factors. If the rest of the world [contracts], then Russia's economic revival would stall and possible reverse."
One of Hong Kong's largest property developers sold a duplex apartment at a record price of HKD 439 million, shortly after the city's chief executive Donald Tsang spoke of the possibility of an impending real estate bubble.

ABU DHABI - Emirates Telecommunications Corp., or Etisalat, has signed an agreement for a three-year sponsorship deal with Manchester City Football Club that will make it the Premier League team's exclusive telecoms partner in the 18 countries in which it operates.
Etisalat and Manchester City signed Tuesday an agreement "which precedes a full three-year strategic sponsorship agreement to be formalized later this year," Etisalat said in a statement. Etisalat did not disclose the value of the sponsorship deal.

Many resort hotels now offer villas for sale on site, with all the facilities on tap - but are they a good deal?
Cherry Maslen
5th July 2009 - The Times
On a Mallorcan beach in 1950, a row of simple straw huts - not one of them with an ensuite - was made ready for the first Club Med holidaymakers. The huts had no lights, and the gentils membres (GMs) shared communal washing facilities, but the founder, Gérard Blitz, a yoga-loving Belgian and former water-polo champion, had started something big - the all-inclusive resort had been invented.
Fast-forward to 2009, and what Blitz would have made of his company's latest venture is not clear. After decades in which it has provided increasingly state-of-the-art holiday accommodation to its GMs, Club Med is taking the next step: allowing them to buy their own huts. Or, rather, five-star villas.
This week, the company is unveiling the first of 40 supremely luxurious properties to be built at its complex in Mauritius, which have not only multiple "washing facilities", but private pools. Not quite communal togetherness - though I'm sure Blitz would have been impressed by the five-star yoga mats at the spa.

Kenwood Place luxury flats may show the direction of the market
Kasia Maciejowska
11th July 2009 - The Times
The more optimistic mood in much of the London market is in increasing contrast with the sombre atmosphere elsewhere. Each week more estate agents are convinced that the market is close to its lowest point. This conviction is strongest among those who have experienced previous downturns and are familiar with the signs of an upturn.
Peter Rollings, of Marsh & Parsons, says that gazumping has returned, as a result of a "chronic shortage" of properties for sale. The lack of stock is particularly acute between £1 million and £3 million, where many buyers do not need to borrow a large percentage of the value of a property and are welcome customers at lenders.
Liam Bailey, head of residential research at Knight Frank, talks of "steadily improving picture in the Central London market". The lack of houses for sale is irritating buyers who assume that they can pick up a bargain. But Bailey also sees evidence of the move to quality that has characterised the upturn in the capital and elsewhere. "People want the best streets, and upper-floor flats, rather than basements, and so on," he says The opinions of estate agents are supported by the official figures; the Land Registry's data for April show prices rising by 1.4 per cent. In the prime postcodes, prices were up by 1.6 per cent in May, according to Knight Frank.

House prices stabilise in June as demand stays ahead of supply
Chris Tryhorn and Kathryn Hopkins
The Guardian, Monday 29 June 2009
House prices remained unchanged for the second month running in June as demand continued to exceed the supply of homes, according to a survey published today.
The average price of a home in England and Wales stayed at £155,600, researchers at Hometrack said, citing rising sales volumes and a higher number of buyer registrations along with a dwindling supply of housing.
Price falls were recorded in just 3% of postcodes, down from 32% in April and about 60% at the start of the year, while the annual rate of decline eased to 8.7% in June from 9.6% in May.
The survey said that demand for housing in London and the south-east had been particularly strong, rising 52% and 46% respectively over the first half of the year. The increase in Wales over the same period was just 19%, with 20% recorded in the north-east.

Antonio Banderas and Melanie Griffith to have beachfront garden seized in Spain
According to reports in Spain, the 48-year-old actor and his American wife, the Hollywood star Melanie Griffith, 51, have been told part of the gardens at their £5 million mansion near Marbella is to be made public land.
Over 14,000 square feet of land belonging to the couple will be seized to allow public access to the beach. The confiscated strip lies adjacent to the 40 ft swimming pool at the villa, named La Gaviota, which the Hollywood pair have used as their summer home for more than a decade.

Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport
By Tom Ford
I was starting to think I shouldn't have worn shorts and a scruffy T-shirt saying "Burnout king" to drive the world's fastest and most expensive production convertible. Now I'm next to the gleaming silver wedge of billionaire boy's toy, it feels a bit disrespectful. People who drive cars such as this don't look like me. They have cashmere underpants and yachts made of ivory. That is the kind of person in the market for a £1.2m Bugatti Grand Sport.
Absorb that figure. One point two million pounds. For a car. Can it possibly be worth that much? Well, it is a serious piece of kit. Bugatti will make just 150 Grand Sports for people who think the coupé is a bit wallflowery. People rich enough to be able to afford a premium on the standard Veyron's £880,000 and vain enough to want to be seen to afford a car quicker than many aeroplanes.
